The mission behind Animal Self Selection is to provide horse and dog owners with the knowledge to set up their own self selection session. In the following segments we look at the basis of the modality and how we can use this knowledge to learn more about medicinal herbs and how we can use them to improve the overall health and well-being of our animals'.
Equine self-selection is part of a framework also known as applied zoo- (animal) pharmacy (medicine) and gnosis (knowledge). This modality which is also referred to as animal self selection was designed to bring a rich pharmacopoeia of natural remedies to animals that are not able to naturally forage.
The science behind this process is based on animal self medication, which has been used for thousands of years as part of the evolution process between plants and animals.
Although the principle of the method is quite simple, it is important to observe some of the "rules" of offering so that we are able to work within the framework of the method. Medicinal plants can help with a variety of problems, however there are some important considerations that need to be taken into account. These "rules" are explained in the BASICS course learning modules which explain various aspects of the modality. Together with information on the theory, science and research behind the practice.
Once you understand the basic theory behind the practice of animal self-selection, it's a matter of putting it into practice. We will look into this further within the course, so that you have all of the information needed to implement the session. During the course, we will discuss more about the medicinal plants that you might want to offer in accordance with the issues or concerns to be taken into account.
The process of animal self-selection is a fabulous modality that can help you understand what is going on "behind the scenes". Enabling you to "tune into" your equines needs, according to their own body systems. If used regularly it can help to uncover layers of healing to get to the root cause of the issues at hand, as well as helping to strengthen your own bond.
Animal self selection is based on the principle that animals can naturally heal themselves by using the medicinal compounds in plants and soils to support homeostasis. in this section we learn more about animal self medication in regards to our canine friends.
Research shows us that the process of self-selection in animals is based on two main principles.
Metabolite groups - used to distinguish between "food" and medicinal plants/herbs.
Together with what is known as the theory of sensory modulation, which assumes that the "pleasantness" of a plant changes according to the animal's state of health, which in turn affects the smell and taste of the plant, which will change according to the imbalance within.
The process of applied zoopharmacognosy can often be observed when a dog naturally self-selects couch grass. Many of us will have noticed our dog doing this, which is due to the receptors in the body changing so that the grass will suddenly taste (or smell) good. This form of self medication is often due to an inherent (usually gut-related) imbalance, which will cause the dog to eat the grass, which may settle his stomach or cause him/ her to purge. In either case, the dog has chosen the plant according to their medicinal needs. When the dog begins to feel better, the chemical balance will change and he or she stop eating the grass.
Once we understand why our animals treat themselves, we can use this knowledge to improve their well-being on a variety of levels. The BASICS course explains the method in detail, from the science and research behind the method to the rules and practice, everything is covered so that you are able to start your own self selection session.
The BASICS course can provide you with the knowledge to essentially "tune into" the needs of your wonderful canine friend. Helping us to get to the root cause of their issues, which can also ultimately help to create a stronger bond.
